AdBlue® is a diesel exhaust fluid used in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems fitted to modern diesel vehicles and machinery. When injected into the exhaust stream, it reacts with nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and converts them into nitrogen and water vapour. AdBlue® is not a fuel additive and must be stored separately from diesel.
Modern diesel vehicles with SCR systems are designed to warn the driver when AdBlue® levels are low. If AdBlue® runs out entirely, the vehicle’s engine management system will typically restrict engine power or, in some cases, prevent the engine from restarting until AdBlue® is replenished. Keeping the AdBlue® tank above the minimum level avoids this situation.
No. AdBlue® is used exclusively with diesel engines fitted with SCR after-treatment systems. It has no application in petrol engines. Never add AdBlue® to a diesel fuel tank — it must be put into the dedicated AdBlue® filler only, which is separate from the fuel filler and marked accordingly.
