Product Description

Gem Multigear XEP 80W-90 is a mineral-based extreme-pressure gear oil for compatible automotive, commercial vehicle and off-highway applications requiring an SAE 80W-90 lubricant.

Its extreme-pressure additive system is designed to maintain a protective lubricating film between heavily loaded gear surfaces, helping reduce wear under high-load and shock-load conditions. The formulation also supports oxidation stability and protection against rust and corrosion.

Multigear XEP 80W-90 provides API GL-4 and GL-5 performance. These classifications cover different gear designs and operating requirements and should not be treated as universally interchangeable. Suitability must be confirmed for the specific gearbox, axle or final-drive system before use.

Applications

Axles and Final Drives

For automotive, commercial vehicle and off-highway axles requiring an SAE 80W-90 gear oil with the stated API performance level.

Hypoid Gear Systems

Suitable for compatible hypoid gears operating under high-load, high-sliding or shock-load conditions where API GL-5 performance is required.

Compatible Manual Gearboxes

May be used in manual gearboxes only where SAE 80W-90 and the stated API performance level are specifically permitted. Do not assume compatibility with synchromesh components solely because API GL-4 performance is stated.

Commercial and Off-Highway Equipment

For gear systems in commercial vehicles, plant and off-highway equipment requiring this viscosity grade and performance level.

Always check the required product type, grade, specification and compatibility against the vehicle or equipment manufacturer’s recommendations before use.

Common Questions

API GL-4 and GL-5 are gear-oil performance classifications rather than viscosity grades.

GL-4 is commonly associated with moderately loaded gear systems and selected manual transmissions. GL-5 provides a higher level of extreme-pressure performance for heavily loaded gear sets, particularly hypoid axles and final drives.

GL-5 should not automatically be treated as a replacement for GL-4 in every application.

Only where an SAE 80W-90 lubricant with the stated API performance is specifically permitted for that transmission.

Synchroniser materials and friction requirements vary between gearbox designs. The current equipment documentation should therefore be checked before use.
