Neat cutting oils are used undiluted and provide strong lubrication at the cutting interface. They are typically used for slower-speed, heavier machining operations where lubrication is the priority. Water-miscible fluids are diluted with water before use and provide better cooling, making them more suitable for higher-speed operations where heat removal is the main requirement.
The correct fluid depends on the metal type, the cutting operation and the required surface finish. Some metals, such as aluminium, require specific formulations to avoid staining or chemical reaction. Water-miscible fluids should be maintained at the concentration specified by the manufacturer, typically checked with a refractometer. Incorrect concentration — too dilute or too concentrated — can affect cutting performance, tool life and the risk of bacterial growth in the sump. Check concentration regularly and top up with the correct mix ratio rather than adding concentrate or water alone.
There is no single universal interval. Fluid life depends on the volume of the sump, the machining operations performed, the metals involved and how well the fluid is maintained. Monitoring pH, concentration and signs of contamination (odour, colour change) helps determine when a change is needed. Follow the fluid manufacturer’s guidance for sump management.
