Grease is used where oil cannot be easily retained — open bearings, chassis lubrication points, slow-moving components and intermittently operated mechanisms. It acts as a reservoir of lubricant, releasing oil gradually under mechanical stress, and also provides a protective seal against water and contaminants.
The NLGI grade indicates the consistency, or stiffness, of a grease, on a scale from 000 (very soft) to 6 (very hard). NLGI 2 is the most commonly used grade for general industrial, automotive and agricultural applications. The correct grade for your application will be specified by the equipment manufacturer.
Lithium greases are general-purpose products suitable for most standard applications. Lithium complex greases have a higher dropping point, meaning they remain stable at higher temperatures, and typically offer better extreme-pressure and water resistance. Lithium complex greases are used where operating conditions are more demanding.
Re-greasing intervals depend on the equipment manufacturer’s recommendation, bearing speed and size, operating temperature and exposure to water or contaminants. Always follow the service schedule in the equipment manual. Over-greasing can be as damaging as under-greasing in some bearing types.
