Gear and axle oil lubricates the gears, bearings and seals within manual gearboxes, differentials and final drive axles. It forms a protective film between gear teeth under high contact pressure, reducing wear and heat generation during operation.
GL-4 provides moderate extreme-pressure protection and is commonly specified for manual gearboxes and certain differentials. GL-5 provides a higher level of extreme-pressure protection, typically required for hypoid axle sets where gear sliding loads are greater. Using GL-5 in equipment specified for GL-4 can, in some designs, cause corrosion of yellow metal components — always follow the manufacturer’s specification.
The required API GL classification and SAE viscosity grade will be specified by the vehicle or equipment manufacturer and can be found in the owner’s handbook or service manual. The Gem Oils technical team can confirm the correct product if you provide the vehicle make, model and axle type.
Mixing gear oils from different manufacturers or of different grades is not recommended, as additive packages can interact unpredictably. Where possible, drain the system fully and refill with a single, specified product. Contact Gem Oils for guidance if you are switching products.
