Gear oil is typically used in manual gearboxes, differentials and axles, and contains extreme-pressure additives suited to the high contact loads between gear teeth. Transmission oil — particularly automatic transmission fluid (ATF) — is formulated with specific frictional properties to support smooth gear changes in automatic transmissions. The two are not interchangeable.
API GL ratings indicate the level of extreme-pressure performance a gear oil provides. GL-4 is commonly specified for manual gearboxes and some differentials. GL-5 provides a higher level of extreme-pressure protection and is typically specified for hypoid differentials. Always use the rating specified by the vehicle or equipment manufacturer, as using GL-5 in a gearbox specified for GL-4 can cause seal or synchroniser damage in some designs.
