2-stroke oil is designed to be mixed with petrol before use because 2-stroke engines have no separate oil reservoir — the oil is burned with the fuel during combustion. 4-stroke oil is used in a dedicated sump, in the same way as a car engine, and is not mixed with fuel. Using the wrong type of oil for your engine type can cause damage.
The correct ratio is set by the equipment manufacturer and is usually printed on the machine or in the operator’s handbook. Common ratios are 25:1, 40:1 and 50:1. Gem Oils supplies pre-measured 2-stroke mixing units to help ensure the correct ratio is achieved. Always follow the manufacturer’s stated ratio.
No. Car engine oils are not formulated for the operating conditions of small air-cooled engines, which run at higher temperatures and with different lubrication requirements than automotive engines. Using car engine oil in garden machinery can lead to premature wear. Use a dedicated garden engine oil matched to your equipment manufacturer’s specification.
Most manufacturers recommend changing 4-stroke engine oil at the start of each mowing season or after a set number of operating hours — whichever comes first. The specific interval is set by the equipment manufacturer and will be in your operator’s handbook. If the oil is dark or contaminated, change it regardless of interval.
