A UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) lubricates the transmission, wet brakes, hydraulics and differential from a single fluid. A STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) additionally covers the engine. The systems covered depend on the specific product and what the tractor manufacturer permits — always confirm against your operator’s manual before switching to a multipurpose fluid.
Using a fluid not specified for wet brake use can alter the friction characteristics of the braking system, potentially causing brake chatter, reduced stopping performance or brake slip. Always use a fluid that is confirmed as suitable for wet brake applications by the manufacturer.
Most modern tractors are designed around a UTTO-type fluid, but some manufacturers require separate dedicated fluids for the engine, transmission and hydraulics. Always check the operator’s manual for your specific model. The Gem Oils technical team can confirm whether a multipurpose fluid is appropriate for your tractor.
Standard hydraulic oil is formulated for hydraulic performance only. Multipurpose tractor fluid additionally addresses the extreme-pressure requirements of the transmission, wet brake friction requirements and, in the case of STOU, engine protection. Using standard hydraulic oil in a system designed for UTTO or STOU can lead to wet brake and transmission problems.
