Choosing the Right Lubricant for Off-Highway Equipment
Off-highway equipment can place very different demands on its lubricants depending on the machine, component, operating environment and duty cycle.
The correct product is determined first by the manufacturer’s required specification and viscosity grade. Factors such as operating temperature, load, service interval and equipment condition can then help determine the most appropriate product within those requirements.
This becomes particularly important across mixed fleets, where similar machines may require different engine oils, hydraulic fluids or drivetrain lubricants.

Off-Highway Lubricants FAQs
Practical answers to common questions around lubricant selection, servicing, compatibility and storage for off-highway plant and equipment.
Not necessarily. A matching viscosity grade does not mean two lubricants have the same performance level, additive system or manufacturer approvals. Mixing products can also affect the performance of the existing lubricant. Where a change of product is required, check the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and product compatibility before topping up or changing over.
Service intervals should be based on the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations rather than a general mileage or operating-hour rule. Working environment, load, temperature, contamination and operating pattern can all influence lubricant condition and service requirements. More demanding applications may also require additional condition monitoring or shorter intervals.
They are different viscosity classification systems used for different types of lubricants. SAE grades are commonly associated with engine and gear oils, while ISO VG grades are widely used for hydraulic and industrial oils. An SAE 30 oil, for example, should not be assumed to be equivalent to an ISO VG 30 oil simply because the numbers are similar.
Avoid continuing to operate the equipment until the situation has been assessed. The appropriate action will depend on the product added, the quantity involved and the system affected. Check the equipment manufacturer’s guidance and, where necessary, speak to your service provider or lubricant supplier before draining, flushing or restarting the machine.
Keep lubricants sealed, clearly identified and protected from water, dirt and other contaminants. Containers should be stored appropriately and dispensing equipment kept clean to reduce the risk of cross-contamination between products. Always follow the storage instructions provided for the individual lubricant.
