Choosing the Right Marine Lubricant
Marine lubrication differs from land-based applications in several important respects. Saltwater contamination, high humidity, continuous operation, and the shock loading associated with propeller drives all place unique demands on engine oils, hydraulic fluids, and greases. Selecting the correct product for each system reduces wear, prevents corrosion, and protects the investment in marine machinery.

Not simply because the viscosity grade appears suitable. Marine engine requirements vary by engine type and manufacturer, so the required lubricant specification should always be checked before use.
The operating environment can influence maintenance requirements, particularly where machinery and components are exposed to moisture and corrosion. Lubricant selection should still begin with the equipment manufacturer’s requirements, with environmental conditions considered where relevant.
Only where the product meets the requirements of each system. Different hydraulic equipment can specify different viscosity grades or performance requirements, so compatibility should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Where possible, provide the engine or equipment manufacturer, model, application and the lubricant specification shown in the operating or service information. The product currently being used can also be helpful.
