choosing the Right Commercial Vehicle Lubricant
Two commercial vehicles that appear similar can require different lubricants. Engine design, transmission type, axle specification, emissions equipment and manufacturer requirements can all affect product selection.
The starting point should always be the specification and viscosity grade required by the vehicle or component manufacturer. Operating conditions, service intervals and the lubricant already in use can then be considered when selecting an appropriate product.
This is particularly important for mixed fleets, where purchasing one product across several vehicles may be convenient but is only appropriate where that product meets the requirements of every application in which it will be used.

Practical answers to lubricant and maintenance questions that commonly arise in commercial vehicle workshops and fleet operations.
Not automatically. Oil drain intervals are determined by the vehicle or engine manufacturer and can also depend on operating conditions and service regime. A different lubricant should not be used as a reason to extend an interval unless this is specifically supported by the relevant manufacturer guidance.
Not all coolants are compatible. Products can use different additive technologies and specifications, so colour alone should never be used to determine compatibility. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s coolant requirement and the products already in the system before mixing or topping up.
Brand alone does not determine compatibility. The replacement oil must be suitable for the application and meet the required specification and viscosity grade. Where different products are being mixed, compatibility should also be considered. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements before topping up.
