Gem Oils Advice For Silage & Hay Season

Silage and hay season is rapidly approaching. Whether you are making your own, or working as a contractor, care and preparation of your equipment is critical.

When it comes to balers and compactors, after conducting all of the regular maintenance checks, you should also carefully check that:

  • The bale chamber is free of moisture and debris and clean as necessary.
  • Knives are sharp and intact.
  • Flighting and bearings on augers are not broken.
  • All guards are functional and in place
  • No oils leaks from hydraulics, PTO or gear oil systems

It is critically important that you use the correct viscosity baler chain oil as recommended by the manufacturer. Talk to your Gem Oils rep at https://gemoils.ie/about/#our-team – who can advise you on the best lubricant solution for your baler. We can also advise on, and supply, top quality modern greases for your baler.

Gem Oils has Baler chain oil in:

  • VG 46 – light
  • VG 150 – medium
  • VG 220 – heavy

It is important to lubricate both the inner and outer surface of the bushing. Thus, the oil needs to light enough to penetrate, and also tacky in texture, to remain on the outside of the roller chain.

By following these basic steps, your machinery should be in good working order to keep you on schedule this hay and silage season.

It’s important that you always conduct these maintenance checks in advance, in case any repairs or replacements need to be made.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on how to store your equipment correctly when not in use, and on its operation.
